At least 26 security forces were killed and 45 wounded in Taliban attacks across four provinces, officials said Thursday.
At least eight policemen were killed in northern Takhar province after Taliban attacked their post around 1 am on Thursday (2030 GMT Wednesday), provincial council member Mawlawi Karamtullah said.
Fourteen others were also injured in the incident that took place in Khawja Ghar district of the province, he said.
Meanwhile, seven policemen were killed in northern Baghlan province after Taliban stormed their checkpoint Wednesday evening, provincial council member Zarif Zarif told dpa.
At least five policemen were also injured in the incident that took place on the outskirts of Pul-e Khumri, the capital of Baghlan, Zarif said.
At the same time, at least seven security forces were killed in Taliban attacks in Afghanistan’s western Badghis province.
The overnight attacks on Ab Kamri district also wounded at least 20 others, local council member Nasir Nazari told dpa.
The militants stormed local government buildings, overrunning two checkpoints. The militants retreated after a fierce gun battle, the official said. A Taliban attack left four dead in northern Jawzjan province, an official said, in a surge of militant attacks across the country’s northern provinces.
The attack on a checkpoint in Faizabad district of the province also wounded six others, the head of the local council, Abul Hai Hayat, said.
The Taliban have ramped up their attacks on security forces and government facilities in recent months, while Afghan and US troops have increased operations against the militants’ field commanders. Military sources say around 35 members of the country’s security forces are killed every day in attacks and clashes.
