Phnom Penh: A Cambodian cashew farmer has been killed after accidentally detonating a buried rocket while clearing land in the nation’s northern Preah Vihear province, local media reported Friday. Prak Sokhan, 46, who was also a soldier, was killed Wednesday when the 60-millimetre rocket head exploded, the Khmer Times reported.
“While he was digging the soil, he hit the rocket head left over from the war, causing it to explode and immediately kill him,” district police chief Or Seng told the newspaper. Seng said the government mine-clearance agency, Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC), regularly surveys the area for unexploded ordnance, which is collected and destroyed. CMAC could not be immediately reached for comment Friday. (dpa)
