The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) will continue its focus on supporting local agriculture and fish farming under the wise directives of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
The ministry has taken several initiatives towards this end, such as the launch in September last year of sustainable strategic plan for the 2018-2022 period to achieve excellence in key sectors including municipal affairs, urban planning, agriculture, environment and waste treatment.
The MME initiatives have boosted Qatar’s livestock with remarkable increase in the number of pastoralists and the size of the national herd.
In terms of agriculture, local honey production went up to 20.5 tonnes in Qatar last year.
As part of the Qatari land rehabilitation project, 11 degraded Rawda were rehabilitated while avenues were provided to market locally grown vegetables and fruits by establishing Al Mazrou’a, and Al Khor and Al Wakra yards. These yards are open from November 1 until the end of May each year offering more than 80 local farms an opportunity to sell their products.
The MME, in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, also launched the ‘Qatar Farms’ initiative with the aim of supporting and stimulating the local agricultural produce by giving it priority over imported varieties.
The MME also holds local dates festival in cooperation with Souq Waqif to promote production and marketing of indigenous dates and upgrading its varieties to compete internationally.
The MME saw 100 percent increase in the participation of local, regional and international companies in Qatar International Agricultural Exhibition (Agritec) last year with 313 companies participating in the event.
In fisheries, the ministry paid great attention to fish farming and set up the Water Research Center in Ras Matbakh as a basic requirement for the establishment of small and medium enterprises for aquaculture in the coming years. Qatar is likely to become self-sufficient in fish supply within five years and the government is currently working on floating cage fish farming and shrimp farm construction projects.
In the field of agricultural research, the ministry has implemented many research activities and programmes to support and develop agricultural techniques, both in terms of water conservation and developing agriculture methods.
In the environmental sector, it developed the field of radiation and chemical protection as well as the national system for the regulation and control of radioactive, chemical and hazardous waste activities by reviewing and updating national laws and regulations.
It also strengthened the field of border control and customs clearance of hazardous chemicals and wastes by opening offices of the Radiation Protection and Chemicals Department at all air, sea and land ports of the State.
On the conservation and protection of endangered Qatari trees from overgrazing, the ministry adopted a project to study the impact of the ministerial decision banning camels grazing on natural vegetation in the State of Qatar since 2011, formed a committee to study the positive and negative effects of the decision and adopted a draft land map for the identification and classification of Qatari plants.
The ministry is also supervising and participating in many projects related to marine life such as sea turtles conservation project.
Meanwhile, public parks have seen an unprecedented increase and development, with the opening and rehabilitation of 51 of the 94 parks in different parts of the country, including 40 in Doha. It also built playgrounds for the most popular games such as football, basketball and volleyball and installed fitness equipment at some of the parks and at Doha Corniche.
In waste management, the current processing centre receives 1,720 tonnes of waste against its capacity of 2,300 tonnes per day and produces 110 tonnes of organic fertiliser and 48 tonnes of recyclable materials daily.The government’s initiatives have boosted Qatar’s livestock while local honey production increased to 20.5 tonnes last year
