As many as 214 graduates were honoured during the 22nd Commencement Exercises of the DOLE-OWWA (Department of Labor and Employment-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) Information Technology Programme (ITP) held at City Centre Rotana Doha.
DOLE-OWWA ITP is a global initiative of the Philippine government aimed at empowering overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) through IT training and enabling access to technology. It is being implemented in Qatar by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office –Overseas Workers Welfare (POLO-OWWA).
The pool of graduates for the 22nd batch includes 141 of Basic Computer Course, 73 graduates of Advance Computer Course, 24 of Computer System Servicing and Networking, 25 graduates of Database Fundamentals, 10 of Visual Graphic Design (Adobe Photoshop) and 14 graduates of AutoCAD.
They were presented and confirmed by Welfare Officer and IT Program Director Evelyn Laranang in the presence of Philippine Labour Attache to Qatar David Des Dicang and Vice Consul at the Philippine Embassy in Doha
Benjamin Celedio Jr during the ceremony. Celedio delivered an inspirational message on the occasion on behalf of Philippine Ambassador to Qatar HE Alan
Timbayan.
Also present were OWWA Welfare Officer Isaac Anthony Basil and POLO & OWWA Administrative Staff Edeline Cuevas and Farida Didato.
The programme also included a message delivered by the Head of ITP volunteers Engr. Emilio Manalo. The pool of volunteers of ITP forms the backbone for the successful implementation of the initiative. Graduates Maribeth Paquit and Antonio Opina Jr delivered their testimonies on the occasion. Another highlight of the ceremony was the recognition of top achievers in each course.
The initiative which started in Doha in 2008 with 116 graduates for its first batch is one of the most successful programmes being implemented by POLO-OWWA
that has already benefited thousands of Filipino OFWs in the country.
It has had a big impact for the Filipino community since its inception making a difference to the career of thousands of Filipinos in Qatar who have benefitted from their newly acquired technical know-how in computers. Some of the previous graduates had the opportunity to change and get better jobs while many were promoted in their current job. Yet other graduates have set up their own business after their return to the Philippines.
The programme is also at the forefront of promoting the spirit of volunteerism among Filipinos in Qatar. It is open to all Filipino expats in Qatar who are passionate about sharing their technical skills and knowledge and offering their time to improve the lives of fellow OFWs for free.Basic Course (Monday 5pm to 8pm) Leonardo Chan, Arnel Landicho, Kris Mamaril
