Alexander Zverev, known for being tall and slender, complained Saturday that despite working with fitness coach Jez Green for five years and putting on 15 kilos he still gets called “asparagus.”
The 21-year-old German, who at 1.98 metres is one of the taller players on tour, spoke jokingly about his efforts to put on muscle in an on-court interview after defeating wildcard Alex Bolt in the third round of the Australian Open.
“You can’t really tell, I’m disappointed, I’m still called the skinny dude on tour for some reason even though I’ve put on about 15 kilos.
“When he [Green] started working with Andy [Murray], you could actually see, he became one of the strongest dudes on tour, me I’m still looking like, I don’t know, I’ve been called asparagus a couple of times.
“Even though nobody can tell, I still work very hard in the off-season, I still do lift a lot of weights.”
When the interviewer suggested he try a Rafael Nadal-style sleeveless shirt, he laughed and pulled up his own sleeve.
“Look at that ... Who’s gonna be scared of that?! When Rafa puts that on it’s intimidating. If I would put that on the opponent might start laughing.” (DPA)
