The Qatari Amiri Air Force on Wednesday took delivery of the first of 36 Rafale multi-purpose fighter jets it has ordered from French manufacturer Dassault.
The aircraft delivery ceremony was held at the headquarters of Dassault Aviation in Bordeaux, France, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs HE Dr Khalid bin Mohammed al Attiyah, Secretary of State to the French Minister of the Armed Forces Genevieve Darrieussecq, and Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation Eric Trappier.
In a speech on the occasion, Attiyah highlighted the historic relations between the two countries.
Attiyah chose “Al-Adiyat” to be the official name of the Qatari Rafale aircraft, because it was mentioned in Holy Quran.
Qatar signed an agreement with France in 2015 to supply the Amiri Air Force with 24 Rafale aircraft, adding 12 more later. The twin-engine fighter has been in service with the French Air Force since 2004.
The ceremony was attended by Ambassador of Qatar to France HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim al Thani, Commander of Amiri Air Force Major-General (Pilot) HE Mubarak bin Mohammed al Kumait al Khayareen, Qatari Military Attache in France Brigadier-General Engineer Mohammed Mubarak al Shahwani, and a number of senior officers of the Qatari Armed Forces.
