The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani arrived in Munich, Germany, on Thursday.
The Amir will take part in the Munich Security Conference (MSC), which will be held from February 15 to 17. The Amir is accompanied by an official delegation.
MSC is one of the largest and most important international conferences on the global security and defence policies.
The 55th session of the MSC is expected to be the biggest and most important since the founding of the conference.
Over the course of three days, MSC 2019 will be held under the chairmanship Wolfgang Ischinger. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Vice President Mike Pence will be among a number of heads of governments and high-level participants in the conference.
Several international organisations will also be attending the conference.
This year’s conference assumes significance as it’s being held at a time when the world is facing various crises and problems affecting the global security. Issues such as European Union’s assertion, transatlantic cooperation as well as possible consequences of a renewed great power competition will be high on the agenda of the Munich conference.
Experts from across the globe will discuss the future of arms control and cooperation in defence policy.
The intersection between trade and international security will engage the attention of global leaders and domain experts who will also be discussing the effects of climate change and technological innovations on the international security.
MSC Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger summed up the problems and challenges facing the global community ahead of the conference. He said,“When looking at the current state of international affairs, it is difficult to escape the feeling that the world is not just witnessing a series of smaller and bigger crises, but that there is a more fundamental problem. Indeed, we seem to be experiencing a reshuffling of core pieces of the international order.”
“A new era of great power competition is unfolding between the US, China, and Russia, accompanied by a certain leadership vacuum in what has become known as the liberal international order,” said Ischinger.3-day Munich Security Conference to kick off today
