Efforts to electronically link all chambers of commerce in the Arab world got a shot in the arm at the 129th session of the Council of the Union of Arab Chambers held in Muscat on Monday.
Qatar Chamber Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed al Thani headed the Qatari delegation in the meeting, which was attended by Oman’s Minister of Commerce and Industry HE Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Qais bin Mohamed al Yousef as well several chairpersons of Arab chambers.
The QC delegation included board member Mohamed bin Ahmed al Obaidli and Chairman’s Advisory Al Sayyed Ragab.
In the meeting, they discussed the Union’s 2018 financial report, final budget, audit report as well as the draft budget of 2019 and the appointment of an auditor for 2019.
It also reviewed events and activities of the Union during the current year, including Transport and Logistics Conference in Arab World, seventh Investment in Arab Food Security Conference, Arab Chambers’ Executives Seminar, joint chambers meetings, affairs of joint Arab-foreign chambers, Arab-Russian Business Council and Arabia Expo scheduled in April in Moscow.
Sheikh Khalifa said the Union reviewed outcomes of the meeting held in Kuwait in January on the “Electronic Arab Market”.
He noted that the joint electronic Arab market aims to link all Arab chambers electronically.
He said this project would help develop intra-Arab trade, which estimated at only 13 percent of the total Arab trade volume.
Sheikh Khalifa said Qatar supports all efforts to develop joint Arab action, noting that Qatar Chamber is seeking to cooperate with Arab chambers to enhance trade cooperation among member countries in the aim of increasing trade exchange, achieving the integration among Arab chambers and developing Arab economy in general.
Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Qais bin Mohamed al Yousef said the meeting’s attendees were keen to introduce recommendations that help in enhancing the Arab economic and investment integration and developing intra-Arab trade.
The Omani Minister of Commerce and Industry Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy said that the Sultanate has adopted “Tanfeez” public-private partnership program which aims to develop industry, tourism, mining, fisheries and logistics, noting that the private sector plays a key role in this program.
On the sidelines of the meetings, heads of Arab delegations met with Oman Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations, Affairs and Cooperation, and His Majesty’s Special Representative HH Asaad bin Tarek al Said. The meeting reviewed means of enhancing trade and investment relations among Arab countries andstrengthening economic ties and private sector.
