In a major relief to Indian expatriate students still waiting for admissions, Olive International School (OIS) on Tuesday announced that the school has got approval from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to operate in two shifts from the new academic session (2019-20) starting from April this year.
OIS is the fourth Indian school after MES Indian School, Ideal Indian School and Shantiniketan Indian School to get permission from the ministry to run classes in morning and evening shifts.
According to OIS Chairman Davis Edakulathur, registration for admissions for grade 1 to 8 in the newly-approved evening classes of the school has already begun.
The evening classes will be held from 1.50pm to 7.10pm from Sunday to Thursday. For evening shift students, additional classes from 8am to 1pm on Saturday will also be held.
“Entrance test will be conducted for the selection of the students for all the classes. The evening session will have the same facilities, standards and features as the existing morning shift. The school will offer the same fees structure for both the sessions,” Edakulathur said.
Evening classes will only be held in the Thumama campus of the school. The transfer of students from other schools would not be entertained for the evening shift.
The school announced that teachers were available for the evening classes. A new set of qualified teachers would also be joining the school very soon for the evening classes.
According to Edakulathur, a total of 700 students can be admitted in the evening shift at the campus in Al Thumama.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, a senior official at the Indian Embassy in Qatar said that approval for evening shifts in the four schools would go a long way in bridging the gap between large number of Indian students seeking admissions and number of seats available in Indian schools.
Sources said hundreds of Indian students find it difficult to get admissions in schools due to scarcity of seats.
Some other Indian schools are also planning to apply for two-shift classes, according to sources.
“There is always high demand for admissions in Indian schools in Qatar. The immediate solution to meet the huge demand is to allow more schools to run two shifts,” the official said.
