Qatar has stressed the need for dialogue, respect for sovereignty and independence of states to resolve differences and challenges facing the Arab world.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Sultan bin Saad al Muraikhi made the remark at the opening of the 151st session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of Foreign Ministers, in Cairo on Wednesday.
Muraikhi reiterated Qatar’s stance and support for the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international resolutions.
He added that the Arab world must work together to ensure the realisation of this goal.
The minister also discussed the situation in Yemen, describing it as “tragic” due to the destruction and killings taking place in the country.
He said the Arab countries must push all parties in the conflict towards a national reconciliation in line with the GCC initiative and UN Security Council resolution no 2216.
Muraikhi reaffirmed Qatar’s firm stance and keenness on Yemen’s unity, independence and territorial integrity. He called on the international community to help the Yemeni people to overcome the conditions.
He also called on the international community to take appropriate measures to ensure that the dangerous humanitarian conditions do not deteriorate.
The minister noted that Qatar is committed to alleviating the unprecedented human suffering of the Yemeni people. He referred to the announcement made by the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani at the 73rd UN General Assembly, allocating $70 million for Yemen, and the announcement made in February 2019 of responding to the plan of the United Nations for $27 million humanitarian aid to Yemen.
Qatar has provided assistance in previous years worth more than $600 million.
Muraikhi also discussed the situation in Libya and noted that external interference in the affairs of the country could threaten its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, adding that it may also further complicate the crisis and prevent a national consensus sought by the Libyans.
