The man who beat cancer, Wu Siu Hong claimed the PBA-WBT 2019 Amir Cup bowling title after beating Indonesia’s Ryan Lalisang at the Qatar Bowling Center on Friday. With the win Hong also bagged the $20,000 cash prize and a first Amir Cup win for the former world champion.
The 34-year-old, who was diagnosed of cancer at 29, overcame the odds here in Doha with a 438-409 victory. Hong could not contain his excitement, displaying the winner’s cheque and trophy saying, “I feel very excited and great to be here. For me I just played my best and at the end I hit every shot and here I am. I didn’t think I could win this, now I don’t know what to do with $20,000 – maybe I’ll just save it.
“The next tournament for me is the USBC Masters and hope I can continue this winning run.”
The Hong Kong native worked his way from finishing sixth after the squad qualification to bowling a brilliant 204 and 234 against Lalisang’s 173, 236 final step score.
Second-placed Lalisang however, is happy to have made the podium in this year’s competition. The 38-year-old veteran was champion here in Qatar at the Asian Games in 2006.
“I may have not been a champion today but there are more tournaments to come, so I will go back to Indonesia and train harder. I have been to Doha many times and my biggest win here was the Asian Games but I’m glad to have made the podium today. This is my best finish in this competition and I look forward to next year,” Lalisang noted.
Third place went to Singapore’s Keith Saw who picked up his biggest individual finish since going pro. “All six of us from team Singapore made the final so I’ll say we did okay. It’s not been an easy tournament and some guys just kept hitting shots but overall I’m happy. This is my first individual big win and it’s my third time here. The first time I qualified through the desperado squad, second time I didn’t do well at all and now I finished third,” Keith said.
Singapore’s Muhd Jaris Goh, who led the tournament qualifying standings and finished second last year, managed a disappointing fourth place; Michael Mak came in fifth and Qatar’s Ghanim Aboujassoum complete the top six.
The Amir Cup bowling tournament is a prestigious Asian Bowling Federation ranking event and sanctioned by both the ABF and PBA-World Bowling Tour with a total prize money of $102,000.
