A showcase of popular and well-loved French cuisine, music and other forms of celebration of the French language will take place in different venues in Qatar from March 13 to mark
Francophonie Festival.
The French Embassy in Doha and the French Institute of Qatar are taking the lead in honouring the annual festival dedicated to those who love the French language and the culture around.
“During the week, the festival will feature different events that will be of interest not only to Francophones (French-speaking) but also to those who wish to discover the French language,” Ambassador of France to Qatar HE Franck Gellet said at a press conference held at the new French hotel, Al Wadi Hotel, on Sunday.
The envoy said Qatar is also a francophone country since eight percent of its total population or around 200,000 people are speaking the French language.
He also expressed his admiration of Qatar residents, especially Qataris, who speaks the French language which is spoken by 274 million people in five continents and is expected to gain more prominence in the
coming years.
The upcoming programme will start with the eloquent speech tournaments between students of French in Qatar to be held at the City Centre Rotana Doha on March 13, from 5pm.
The event is very popular in France and this is the first time it will be hosted in Qatar. It will present eight finalists during their eliminatory trials in front of a panel of judges comprised of diplomats, lawyers and
theatre professionals.
The speech contest will be followed by the second French Touch Rugby Tournament featuring 24 teams and hosted by Blue Falcons Rugby Club at the Doha Sport Park on March 15 from 8am to 6pm.
A French dictation event (La Grande dictée de langue Française) featuring two categories - French as a mother tongue and French as a second language - will be hosted at Al Wadi Hotel on March 21, from 5pm.
From March 21 to March 24, gastronomic event ‘Goût de France/ Good France’ featuring the flavours of Province will be celebrated in many restaurants
throughout Doha.
Olympiades of the Francophonie’, a series of sporting tournaments among the student faculties, which will commence with fencing, theatrical performances, writing contests and plastic arts, is set to take place at the French Qatari Voltaire School, in Al Waab on March 23, from 10am to 4pm.
Also on March 23 at 4pm, French musical group called Cinq de Coeur will present ‘The non-return concert’ at the Katara Drama Theatre.
