The Israeli army said on Thursday it is investigating the deaths of 11 Palestinians during demonstrations along the Gaza-Israel border last year.
Five separate cases were opened in relation to five separate days of demonstrations in Gaza that were held as part of the Great March of Return which began on March 30, 2018.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Israeli forces have killed more than 260 Palestinians and wounded thousands in the weekly protests. After reviewing initial investigation by the relevant commanders, the Military Advocate General’s Office ordered the Military Police to investigate the five cases.
An Israeli official said the incidents in question occurred between March 30 and July 13 last year. They include the death of Abd al-Nabi, a Palestinian man who, according to a video circulated in local media, appeared to have been shot in the back while running away from the border on March 30. The probes are also looking into the death of Razan al-Najjar, a 21-year-old paramedic was shot dead by Israeli troops on June 1, sparking international outcry.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians have taken part in the demonstrations demanding a “right of return” to the territory of today’s Israel. At the end of February, UN investigators said there is evidence pointing to crimes against humanity by Israeli security forces who shot, injured and killed Palestinians during the massive protests last year.
