Top seeds Cherif Younnouse and Ahmed Tijan from Qatar scripted a superb come-from-behind victory against Russian fifth seeds Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy in the second knockout round of the Katara Beach Open Cup 2019 at the majestic Katara Cultural Village Amphitheatre on Thursday.
The local stars, ranked eighth in the world, lost the opening set virtually without any resistance. But the reigning Asian and Asian Games champions put up a stirring fightback and went on to win 12-21, 21-18, 15-8 in 40 minutes to advance to the third knockout meeting against Polish second seeds Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek who downed Austrians Robin Seidl and Philipp Waller 21-19, 21-19.
Last year on the way to the bronze medal finish, Younousse and Tijan had beaten Bryl and Fijalek in three sets at the same stage where they will clash with them again on Friday.
Following up their first knockout straight-set victory over Brazilian new pairing of Alison Cerutti and Andre Loyola, Younousse and Tijan were up against The Hague Four-Star champions Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy. The latter had teamed up with Igor Velichko last year here and were the runners-up to Dutch Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen.
When the Russian forged 1-0 ahead after the opening set, one expected Younousse and Tijan to face a steep climb. The Qatari players however responded to the difficult situation bravely and put up some fine defence and attack combinations to grab a three-point advantage in the second (19-16 and 20-17). The fifth seeds saved a set point but they could do anything as Younousse sealed the set at 21-18.
In the tie-break set, Younousse and Tijan paraded their talent quite vividly and bolted to a commanding 9-1 lead. The Qatari team maintained their pressure and Younousse executed a clever drop to force the match point (14-7). A touch-out off Younousse allowed them to extend their comeback by a point but Stoyanovskiy served long to surrender the match.
For a place in the semi-finals, Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo, the eighth seeds, will clach with Chilean Grimalt cousins Esteban and Marco, fourth seeds Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira from Spain will take on Nikita Liamin and Velichko, while sixth seeds Piotr Kantor Bartosz Losiak of Poland are pitted against Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, who were fourth in Doha, last year.katara beach open cup resultsResults - Round 1
