Qatar pays adequate attention to ensuring gender equality and fair representation of women in the formation of national committees, boards of directors and task forces in ministries and public institutions, making women active leaders in ministries and institutions in the state, said Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs HE Yousef bin Mohammed al Othman Fakhroo.
Speaking at the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, Fakhroo reviewed Qatar’s steps to promote empowerment of women and their relevance to sustainable development.
He said the social situation of women had seen an increase in the legislative context and the permanent constitution of the State stipulated that people are equal before the law, without distinction in race, origin, language and religion.
He added that Qatar has achieved, in a short period, a distinct social and economic transformation to improve the status of women.
The minister said the government had paid great attention to the economic and professional empowerment of women and to strengthening their capacities, ensuring their right to work, providing decent work and promoting social protection in all national strategies and plans.
He pointed out that the participation of Qatari women in the labour force is about 37 percent for women aged 25-29 years and close to 49 percent for the 30-34 age group, adding the percentage of women in decision-making positions is 30 percent, according to official statistics.
He said Qatari women have become a key partner in economic development, with Qatar ranking first in the index of equal business opportunities between the sexes in the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.
The minister also referred to the creation of an annual prize for businesswomen to be awarded to the most prominent businessmen who contributed to the Qatari society and the national economy.
The law guaranteed women equality with men in the right to register, vote and to stand for elections, pointing out that the participation rate of women in the vote was 47 percent.
