THERE is a growing interest in the Dominican Republic among the business community in Qatar, which is very encouraging, said the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Qatar HE Federico Alberto Cuello Camilo.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the National Day celebrations of his country, Camilo said that while Qatar is a country with the highest per capita income in the world, the Dominican Republic offers investment opportunities in diverse sectors, including tourism, real estate, logistics and electricity.
“Qatar can also be immensely useful for us as our energy sector is insufficient to meet the country’s future needs. We need LNG to cover 60 percent of our needs as we look to shift from oil-based economy to non-oil based economy,” Camilo added.
“Qatar, with its strong relationship with the US, can think of using our country as logistics base as our entire region depends on Venezuela for oil supply and unfortunately, Venezuela’s oil production has dipped significantly. Qatar also has immense experience in electricity production,” the ambassador said.
The Dominican Republic has an annual growth rate of six percent.
The envoy further lauded Qatar’s resilience which helped it overcome the challenges posed by the blockade imposed on the country by some of its neighbours. He also praised the health and education facilities in the country.
The ambassador said the visit of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani to the Dominican Republic on the invitation of President Danilo Medina will further strengthen ties between the two countries.
The Dominican Republic, he noted, is also ready to have an open sky agreement with Qatar Airways, which would allow the airline to fly across the region. He said a direct flight between Qatar and the Dominican Republic by Qatar Airways will be highly helpful.
The ambassador further pointed out that his country is self-sufficient in eight major and essential food stuffs and a link with Qatar would help establish a supply chain between the two countries.
