Beijing: China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, on Friday voted to approve a law meant to improve conditions for foreign firms.  Of the 2,948 delegates attending the closing ceremony of the annual parliamentary session in Beijing, 2,929 voted to pass the law. Eight people voted against, and there were eight abstentions. Three other votes did not register. The largely rubber-stamp parliament also approved a government work report setting a 6 to 6.5 per cent economic growth target for 2019 — China’s lowest in almost three decades — and a measure raising defence spending by 7.5 per cent. The congress, which critics say is a rubber-stamp parliament, has never voted down a proposal put before it. (DPA)
