Rodrigo Tabata scored the wiiner in the first half as Al Rayyan battled to a 1-0 victory over Al Khor in the QNB Stars League at the AL Sadd Stadium on Friday.
Al Rayyan moved to 33 points, while Al Khor stayed on 15.
The first half was very much an attacking display from Al Rayyan as they showed the gulf in quality between the two sides.
A stream of attacks resulted in efforts from Abdulrahman al Harazi and Koh Myong-Jin which were well kept out by Baba Djibril in the opposition goal.
As the half developed, Tabata came into the game and was rewarded for his creativity when he grabbed the only goal of the evening. A pressing move saw Mohammed Juma whip in a cross from the left which was met in the middle of the box by Tabata who headed home.
Al Khor were able to make more of an impression on the match as the clock ticked down. However, most of their efforts went in vain. Helal Mohammed went close with a stinging shot which was well kept out, before Wagner Ferreira had a couple of chances that he was unlucky to convert.
Lucca Borges could have doubled the Lions lead in the 89th but saw his strike parried away to safety after a beautiful interchange of passes with Tabata.
Al Gharafa rallied from a goal down to beat Al Arabi 2-1 in the late kick off at the Al Arabi Stadium.
Wilfried Bony continued his scoring streak with the opener just two minutes into the game. Ahmed Alaaedin equalised with a thumping finish for the Cheetahs five minutes later.
Bony’s night was later ruined with 17 minutes left in the game when he turned into his own net from a Vladimir Weiss freekick.
Al Gharafa move up to seventh in the league behind Al Arabi.
