A large number of people took part in the World Kidney Day activities organised by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) at Corniche on Friday. Schools, Qatar University College of Medicine and a number of associations also took part in the event themed ‘Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere’.
The events included a walkathon, as well as several awareness activities aimed at educating the community about the importance of good kidney health.
World Kidney Day is marked annually on March 14. HMC has been holding awareness activities about kidney health since March 8, and will continue until March 19.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, HMC Nephrology Consultant Dr Essa Abuhelaiqa said: “This year we had more participants than in the previous years. According to our estimate, between 400 and 500 people participated this year, of whom many were not involved in the medical care, which is an indication that we are reaching every part of the society.”
The schools held activities to inform people about how they can take good care of their kidneys.
Talking about the schools which participated, Abuhelaiqa said, “Their role is to raise people’s awareness about kidney health in an entertaining manner. This year we tried to focus not only on adult or women but also children.”
HMC Nephrology Consultant Dr Mohamad Alkadi said that besides drinking enough water and fluids, people should avoid painkillers if possible. “Those who have a family history of chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and diabetes must get their kidneys examined to find out if they have a disease or not. If they do, they should have a regular follow-up with the doctor to avoid falling into the stage of dialysis or kidney transplant.”
