Mayawati, the leader of India’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and four-time chief minister of the populous state of Uttar Pradesh, says she will not contest the upcoming general elections. The BSP claims to represent Dalits, former known as untouchables, who form the lowest rung of India’s archaic Hindu class system.
Mayawati did not explicitly state why she is not running, but said it was more important to win seats for the alliance than for her to win a single seat.
“Keeping in mind the current political situation, I have decided not to contest the Lok Sabha elections,” she said at a press briefing in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.
India’s general elections are scheduled to be held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. Counting of votes is scheduled on May 23 and results are expected the same day.
