Istanbul: An appeals court in Ankara on Friday upheld the life sentences of 37 people accused of attempting to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, state news agency Anadolu reported. The 37 defendants, all military personnel, were found guilty in October 2017 of attempting to assassinate Erdogan on the night of an attempted coup on July 15, 2016, as well as the murder of two policemen. The were accused of conducting a helicopter raid on a hotel in Marmaris, a resort town on the Aegean Sea, where Erdogan was on holiday. (dpa)
