Aspire Zone Foundation and Truxtun Capital has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to host the first multi-game eSports World Cup tournament in Qatar. Director General of Aspire Logistics Abdulla al Naemi and President of Truxtun Capital Patrick Moynier signed the agreement in Doha on Sunday. The eSports World Cup titled ‘Qatar eSports Aspire Wega World Cup’ will take place on November 15 this year and will be held every year over the next four years, leading to the live final competition in 2022 on the sidelines of the Qatar FIFA World Cup. Wega and Aspire Zone will also organise a 40-day eSports Festival in Qatar at the Aspire Zone.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Naemi said, “We are thrilled to sign this agreement with ‘WEGA’, the world’s leading e-sports organisation, and to announce the first eSports World Cup in the Middle East.
“At AZF, we are constantly innovating to become the reference in sports excellence worldwide by 2020. The electronic gaming industry is currently one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, with an annual growth rate of 40%. Building on the success of Qatar’s national team during the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year, we are now expanding into this exciting new sports entertainment field.”
“In addition to exciting participants and spectators alike, we are confident the Aspire WEGA World Cup will become another demonstration of Qatar’s ability to host exceptional international events.”
Truxtun president praised Qatar’s development in sports and technology and said he felt ‘warm and positive’ on his first visit to the country, which gave him the confidence to engage in this venture.
“Qatar’s vision and ours are aligned as it relates to innovation in sports and business. On my first visit here, I felt positive energy and warmth and I believe Qatar can be a great partner for us,” Moynier said.
“It is a dream to be here, we are very confident and optimistic about this venture. This tournament won’t be all about sports alone; it will help integrate various cultures and ideas among participants. This is a challenge for us to bring Qatar to the forefront of eSports in the world.
“The idea is to engage the youth who are the nucleus of eSports but we plan to go beyond that,” he added.
This alliance between two major companies from sports and technology will offer 2.3 billion eSports players across the globe the chance to compete for financial prizes.
On getting local eSports enthusiasts involved, Naemi said, “This Partnership is important for us and eSports is new to the region, which is why we are involved. We will promote the tournament to reach local eSports enthusiasts so as to boost their participation and help grow the industry in Qatar.”
