INJAZ Qatar, a member of Junior Achievement Worldwide, is launching the second edition of its Job Champions Work Readiness Competition in partnership with the French Embassy in Qatar and sponsored by TOTAL.
The programme targets university and college students from various majors and aims to provide them with the job-readiness and interpersonal skills they require to succeed in a local as well as an international economy.
TOTAL and INJAZ Qatar signed a partnership agreement in the presence of officials from the French Embassy this week.
Students who are currently studying Business, Engineering, Law or IT in one of Qatar’s colleges and universities are eligible to apply for the programme.
More than 170 applications were received this year, representing an increase of 68 percent from 101 applicants last year.
Based on a set of competitive selection criteria, 35 students were shortlisted to participate in this year’s edition. They will go through a three-week learning adventure, moving from one phase to another, culminating in a group competition.
In the first module, students will attend ‘Career Success’, a six-session career planning programme. They will then undergo a psychometric test to allow them to better understand their skills, interests, strengths and weaknesses, and based on that, find a suitable career path.
During module two of the programme, students will attend a series of advanced workshops that enable them to further hone their skills and knowledge of problem-solving, team work and pitching skills. They will also have the chance to spend one day at the TOTAL’s offices in Qatar where they will gain insight into the structure, business model and product lines of the company.
In module three, students are put into seven diversified five-member groups. Each group will play the role of a consulting company and, depending on their major, each student assumes an employee role at this company.
Groups are presented with a real business challenge related to TOTAL’s operations. With the help of mentors and corporate volunteers, the student groups are tasked to propose a solution to the challenge.
The groups are given a week to brainstorm, research and prepare a five-minute presentation of their idea. Groups will then be required to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges consisting of senior managers from TOTAL, INJAZ and the French Embassy in hopes of winning the all-expenses paid internship at TOTAL headquarters in France.
Sheikha Hanadi bint Nasser al Thani, chairperson of INJAZ Qatar and INJAZ Al Arab, said: “When young people enter the workforce, technical skills or education alone is not enough to ensure their professional success. They also need interpersonal and soft skills that will help them excel and advance in their career. The Job Champions competition meets the country’s increasing demand for youth job-readiness education, which is a crucial element of human development being a key pillar in Qatar’s National Vision 2030.”
TOTAL and INJAZ Qatar plan to host an award ceremony in early April to announce the winners of this year’s Job Champions Competition. The winning team will advance to module four of the programme, which is a one-month paid internship; one week in TOTAL Qatar and three weeks in TOTAL France. The all-expenses paid internship in France is scheduled to take place in July or August 2019. Students will get hands-on experience of working in a top global company in an international setting.
The French Embassy in Qatar is collaborating with INJAZ Qatar and Total for this programme, which will contribute to the training of students in Qatar by French companies, as well as enhance the participation of French companies to Qatar’s knowledge-based economy and capacity building, in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
With the ever growing demand and need for creative initiatives in the field of employability skills education, INJAZ Qatar’s Job Champions Competition, with both its local and international components, offers an excellent platform for youth empowerment and development.
As the competition sponsor, TOTAL, with its longstanding partnership with Qatar, has undertaken various initiatives in a number of different sectors. Through a long term corporate social responsibility plan, over the years, it has invested in research and youth education in order to contribute to creating a knowledge-based economy.
Laurent Wolffsheim, managing director of TOTAL in Qatar said, “Total is very proud of its longstanding partnership with Qatar. Throughout our association, spanning over 80 years, we remain committed to serving the State of Qatar in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. Within the pillar of human development, Total strongly believes in the importance of empowering our youth with the skills required to better understand current market needs and challenges in the workplace, aiming to inspire the leaders of tomorrow.”
