Hailing the achievement of post-blockade self-sufficiency projects in Qatar as a ‘real miracle’, Qatar Chamber (QC) Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al Thani said the projects led to the expansion of state’s industrial sector.
In an interview with a local Arabic daily published on Monday, Sheikh Khalifa underlined that achieving self-sufficiency was a joint project between the public sector and the private sector represented in Qatar Chamber.
“The efforts are shared by all, it is a project involving all governmental and civil parties,” he said.
Sheikh Khalifa said that more than 250 industrial licenses were issued for the establishment of local factories during the period of the blockade, and the production process began in a record period.
He noted last year witnessed the establishment of about 17,000 new companies in various sectors such as trade, agriculture, services, transport and other diversified industries.
“More than 150 large projects will be launched after 2022, including infrastructure projects and roads as well as the construction of buildings, hospitals and schools,” the QC chairman said.
He said the government’s vision of the private sector has changed radically after the blockade and the private sector has become an active partner in the overall development process.
He pointed out that the Qatari private sector has been able to benefit from the blockade and develop itself more intensely and to participate strongly with the government sector in facing the challenges.
Sheikh Khalifa said Qatar has held talks with the Iraqi side to turn the port of Umm Qasr as a transit trade point, linking Qatar with the countries of the region via a land-maritime line, including Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Syria.
“The line will facilitate the flow of goods from the countries of the region and reduce the time period,” he noted.
He highlighted the role of the chamber in supporting the national products, noting that local Qatari products were well received by consumers because of their diversity and high quality that meet the international standards with suitable prices.
“The national products was able to develop itself, relying on advanced technological methods, and to double its production to keep pace with the domestic demand.”
Sheikh Khalifa hailed the recent decision to open freehold ownership to non-Qataris. He said, “The freehold ownership and the permanent residence decisions will have a direct impact on foreign investment and are a key element in attracting investments.”
He said Qatar’s non-oil sector, which is witnessing a great development under the policy of diversifying the country’s income sources, will continue to grow significantly in the coming period.
