In a move to promote greenery, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has recently launched an initiative to green the rooftops of public buildings and installations in Qatar.
As part of the drive, the Public Parks Department of the MME has planted 255 trees on the rooftop of the ministry's building at Doha's Corniche road.
Public Parks Department Director Mohammed al Khouri said the initiative aims to raise awareness among the public and educate them about how to utilise available space to spread greenery in Qatar.
Khouri said most private rooftops in the country are abandoned and only serve the purpose of holding air conditioning equipment and water tanks. He urged people to make a better use of their houses and building rooftops by planting trees , by utilising modern irrigation and gardening tools and light soil that has no impact on the building.
Khouri said if every neighbourhood planted its rooftops with trees, it would have a collective positive impact on the community and the environment.
Meanwhile, focusing its efforts on communities and neighbourhoods, the ministry recently launched its 'Furjan gardens' initiative, which revolves around creating more parks and green fields and spaces in neighbourhoods and residential areas. Besides beautification of roads and installations, the MME's greening initiatives aim to contribute to the purification of air by bringing down pollution levels, as well as aid in temperature control.
The MME published a short video on its Youtube channel to provide more information about the initiative to the public as well as shed light on the ministry's efforts and strategies in greening and beautifying the country.
