Qatar recorded a significant decline in the crime rate in 2018, thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Interior (MoI).
The MoI succeeded in reducing the rate of major crimes per 100,000 persons from the global rate by 98.3 percent despite a 3.6 percent increase in population.
Statistics showed a significant reduction in the rate of criminal offences with murder recording 0.4 cases per 1000,000, a decrease of 95 percent from the global rate of eight cases of murder per 1000,000 persons.
In the category of aggravated assault, the rate recorded was 0.2, a decrease of 99.8 percent from the global rate of up to 100 assaults. The burglary cases were 0.1, 99.9 percent below the global average of 100 burglaries, 0.1 in deliberate fire crimes, which is 99.6 percent lower than the global average of 25, and 0.6 cases of forced theft, 99.4 percent lower than the global average of up to 100 crimes. This was due to the efforts of the MoI in maintaining security and preventing crime and reassuring citizens and residents of safety and security.
Similarly, the rate of drug abuse in Qatari society was 95 percent lower than the global rate. The rate of drug abuse was 0.1 percent of the total population, while the global rate is 2%.
The security indicators were very positive and exceeded the global ratios. The total number of crimes saw an annual drop of 2.4 percent in 2018. About 88.3 percent of the total crimes committed in 2018 were minor in nature such as cheque bounce and non-criminal quarrels.
Major crimes against public security accounted for 0.1 percent of all the crimes committed in 2018.
The cases of forgery decreased by 31.8 percent compared to 2017, minor assaults and quarrels by 19.1 percent, breach of trust by 18.8 percent, cases of non-payment by 16.3 percent and the theft of cars by 13.9 percent. This shows a marked improvement in the level of security situation in the country compared to 2017.
In addition, the MoI has raised its performance level efficiently and effectively through its keenness on development of human resources through training programmes.
Meanwhile, the indicators showed capacity building and upgrading of the skills of 30,000 employees at the work place and the enrolment of 2,000 employees annually in internal and external courses.
This has resulted in raising the level of their skills and practical experience.
The ministry also increases the number of women employees annually by 5 percent. The indicators showed an increase in the percentage of job satisfaction among the female staffs of the ministry to 90 percent. In addition, the ministry reserves a large number of office posts for people with special needs.
In the service and awareness fields, the 2018 indicators recorded significant progress compared to the achievements of 2017.
Service transactions to the public increased by 3.2 percent in 2018 to 72,200,506 transactions during the year, with 200,557 daily transactions approximately, while the rates of the year 2017 recorded 69,954,184 transactions, with 194,314 per day.
The General Directorate of Passports topped the list with 22,837,019 transactions, while the General Directorate of Traffic completed 10,111,677 transactions. The Airport Passports Department completed 13,510,610 transactions to passengers, while the number of services provided by Metrash2 reached about 14,389,763 through smart phones.
The emergency call service (999) registered 2447,015 calls, and the applications for visas and transfer of sponsorship amounted 767,069 applications. The building permits were issued for 89,755 applicants, while 71497 new vehicles were registered and 53780 certificates of good conduct were issued.
In 2018, the Medical Services Department of the Ministry of Interior provided medical services to 701,654 patients.
The Civil Defense Department of the ministry extinguished 1,922 fire incidents and carried out 1,203 rescue and relief operations.
The percentage of public satisfaction over the services of the ministry’s departments was 90 percent.
As for awareness, the number of awareness programmes, activities and awareness initiatives implemented by the ministry increased by 5 percent. The number of students of schools and universities benefiting from awareness programmes of the ministry increased by 10 percent.
