Islamabad: Flash floods and windstorm have killed nearly two dozen people in several parts of Pakistan, officials said on Monday, reinforcing fears of the potential impact of climate change in the South Asian region.
A passenger van was swept away by gushing waters in the north-western region of Waziristan, near the Afghan border, killing eight people, local official Asad Bokhari said.
Heavy rain on the Afghan side of the border caused mountain streams to flood in Pakistani regions, destroying houses, roads and bridges, Bokhari added.
At least five people were killed by windstorm in the southern port city of Karachi on Monday morning, rescue official Shayan Shah said.
The winds caused delay to several flights and rail traffic was briefly suspended, bringing the city of around 20 million people to a halt, Shah added. (dpa)
