Firefighters in Germany battled to contain two wildfires overnight to Monday.
A fire at Gildehauser Venn, a protected moorland near the French border, broke out on Sunday and has since spread to cover an area of around 30 hectares, a fire brigade spokesman said - the size of around 42 football pitches.
Efforts to extinguish the fire have been hampered by the tricky terrain, with fire engines unable to navigate the moors. “That means we had to carry in countless hoses using manpower,” the spokesman said.
The blaze had been brought under control, but firefighting efforts are due to continue into the late afternoon, the spokesman said. There are no buildings in the affected area. Firefighters were brought in from neighbouring states to assist with the efforts, with 350 people deployed in total. One fireman was slightly injured while tackling the blaze.
Meanwhile, a large forest fire broke out about 20 kilometres from the edge of the capital Berlin, covering an area of up to 2.5 hectares.
That fire has also been contained, the fire department said on Monday morning.
