Police have used water canon and batons to disperse thousands of teachers protesting in the Moroccan capital Rabat to demand better working conditions.
The contractual teachers, who are demanding more benefits from the government, were attempting to turn their protest into a sit-in overnight in front of the parliament, after negotiations with the government this week failed.
Teachers in recent years have been hired under a contract system the government introduced to decrease public spending. Protesters are demanding full benefits and retirement plans.
According to the Coordination of Teachers Forced into Contracts’ (CNPCC), 59 protesters were injured. Police used water cannon on Wednesday night to disperse demonstrators in front of parliament. In the early hours of Thursday, police used batons to prevent them from regrouping elsewhere in the city.
“They are chasing us like dogs,” Ahmed Labid, CNPCC’s coordinator for the Marrakech region, told dpa. “Look at how they are treating peaceful protesters. Nights like this only inspire us to come back.”
This is the second time police have forcefully dispersed an overnight sit-in by the contractual teachers. Riot police at the protest declined to commen.
