Rome: Experts working for the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) are urging Italy to withdraw measures against migrant rescue charities sponsored by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
In a May 15 letter seen by dpa, the experts take issue with two directives targeting the Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) Mediterranea and plans to fine charities for each rescued migrant.
The directives, issued in March and April, instructed police to stop Mediterranea’s Mare Jonio and other NGO vessels from entering territorial waters. (DPA)
