BRUSSELS: Belgians go to the polls on Sunday for federal elections, being held in parallel with European Parliament elections, following five months of caretaker government led by liberal Prime Minister Charles Michel.
A migration dispute brought down the centre-right coalition in December, when the nationalist N-VA - the largest group in parliament - walked out in protest at Michel’s decision to endorse the UN Global Migration Compact, a non-binding international accord.
The shaky caretaker government, appointed by King Philippe until the May 26 elections, consists of the Christian Democratic CD&V, the centre-liberal Open VLD and Michel’s francophone MR party.
The Belgian political landscape is fractured, with a francophone south marked by post-industrial decline, and a more prosperous Dutch-speaking north where many dream of independence. Brussels, which has its own regional government, is home to several key European Union institutions. (DPA)
