The ruling party in Sri Lanka survived a vote of no confidence in parliament on Thursday over allegations by an opposition party that the government had failed to prevent the Easter Sunday bombings that claimed 262 lives.
The motion, proposed by the Marxist People’s Liberation Front (JVP), was defeated by 119-92.
The ruling United National Party (UNP), which leads a minority government after a few defections last year, secured the support of the opposition Tamil party to defeat the motion. The JVP claimed the government had failed in its duty to protect citizens by not heeding advance warnings about the attacks from security services and taking appropriate precautions.
The government has argued the warnings did not include specific information about the suicide bomb attacks, which were carried out April 21 on three churches and three luxury hotels.
The UNP would have been required to step down and call fresh elections if the no-confidence motion had passed.
Sri Lanka is due to hold presidential elections later this year while a parliamentary election is due to be held before August of next year.
