A high-profile delegation from the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) visited Sierra Leone and Liberia to discuss bilateral relations and enhance QRCS’s humanitarian roles in Africa.
The QRCS delegation comprised Secretary-General Ali bin Hassan al Hammadi and Head of International Relations Dr Fawzi Oussedik.
Over a week, the delegation met with top government officials in the two countries, visited the communities affected by mudslides, and held talks with top officials of their fellow national societies.
The delegation held several meetings including with presidents, secretaries-general, senior managements, staff and volunteers of Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS).
Two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed by QRCS and its host national societies as a framework of cooperation and stronger relations.
Under the agreements, the parties will work together on the issues of common interest, particularly the launch of water and sanitation, health and hygiene, food security and nutrition, and livelihood projects.
Other aspects of cooperation will involve improvement of community resilience in the face of natural disasters and climate change, disaster preparedness and response, provision of ambulance and emergency care, and other activities related to the mandates of QRCS.
The parties agreed to create joint committees to work towards the relevant goals in the respective capacities of each party.
