Birla Public School (BPS) conducted a two-day professional development programme on ‘Experiential Teaching and Learning’ and ‘Application Based Learning’ for its science teachers recently.
The resource person for the programme, Dr Ashok Pandey, principal of Ahlcon International School, Delhi, explained the vital traits for teacher to follow in personal and professional development and pedagogical application besides providing hands-on classroom strategies for students’ involvement and participation.
The session commenced with a brainstorming activity, imaginary trekking, which would narrate the journey of a child through difficulties and obstacles and teachers had to help the child overcome these.
Dr Pandey also highlighted the major differences between traditional and modern, technology-aided teaching methods and stressed the importance of experiential and student-centered teaching.
Group discussions were initiated over a few cases of student portfolios for the purpose of analysing the positive and negative outcome in certain cases.
The session focused on competency-based learning in which the motivation for learning was discussed. Some tactful strategies such as the ways to connect the material, relevance of skill to the future, and passion for discipline and area of knowledge were also taken up for discussion.
“The workshop engaged the science teachers in active pedagogical training and equipped them with the latest implementation of student-oriented teaching in classes. The workshop was extremely beneficial as it emphasised application-oriented learning, fostering curiosity, search for knowledge and data-based problem solving,” said A P Sharma, principal of BPS.
