AIMED at showcasing yet another aspect of cultural exchange between India and Qatar, an exhibition of Islamic calligraphic works created by Indian artists opened to huge response from visitors at the Katara Cultural Village in Doha on Thursday.
Entitled ‘Multaqa Al-Qulub Wal-Funun: A Gathering of Hearts & Crafts’, the exhibition displays examples of how Arabic calligraphy is preserved and practised in India, and how iconic symbols of Qatar like dhow, falcon, oryx and horse are celebrated by artists.
Running from July 18 to July 30, the exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to appreciate dozens of artworks crafted in various styles of Islamic calligraphy to promote the beauty and diversity of Indian culture, especially those elements which bear affinity with or are part of Qatari culture in particular and the Arab culture in general.
Organised as part of the India-Qatar Year of Culture 2019, the exhibition is being held in cooperation between the embassy of India in Qatar and Radiant Arts, a platform for Dawoodi Bohra artists.
Art pieces by seven artists including Samina Sachak, Mohammed Moiny, Moiz Nagpurwala, Aliasger Vaziri, Mazhar Nizar, Juzer Burhani and Burhanuddin Nagarwala are on display at the show.
Speaking at the inauguration of the event, Indian Ambassador to Qatar HE P Kumaran said, “This is the 24th event that we have organised as part of the Qatar-India Year of Culture. The talent we have in calligraphy represents a facet of India’s composite culture and it is also another manifestation of the links that India has with the Arab world.”
The Indian envoy announced that one more event in calligraphy is expected to be organised at the National Museum of Qatar in a couple of months.
“This will have some real old manuscript copies from two important museums in India,” Kumaran said.
He also revealed that seven to eight more cultural events will be organised in Qatar by the end of this year as part of the India-Qatar Year of Culture 2019.
The envoy, along with Dawoodi Bohra artists, led the inauguration of the event.
Katara Human Resources Department Manager Saif Saeed al Dosari, a number of ambassadors and dignitaries, in addition to art enthusiasts and guests were in attendance at the event.
Kumaran praised the efforts of the Dawoodi Bohra Association and Radiant Arts for bringing talented Indian artists to Doha.
Making the exhibition more attractive are the live calligraphy sessions by the artists of Radiant Arts.
