The fourth edition of Dates Festival kicked off at Souq Waqif on Tuesday with the participation of 85 local farms as well as Hassad and other bodies.
Organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) and Souq Waqif, the festival will continue until August 3.
Assistant Director of Agriculture Affairs at the ministry Adel al Yafei said the organisation of the festival comes in the framework of the great attention paid by Qatar to support and encourage production of all national products including dates to achieve food security.
Qatar is keen to develop the agricultural sector, including palm trees, as well as supporting the owners of farms and those interested in cultivating dates, and upgrading date varieties in terms of quality.
He said the MME expects to sell more than 250,000 tonnes of dates during the festival. A total of 205,000 tonnes of dates were sold during the festival last year.
The ministry has allocated QR10 million annually to buy dates from Qatari farmers, he said, adding that another dates festival will be held in October.
Other festivals will also be held during the coming period to market local agricultural products in Katara Cultural Village, the Quranic Botanic Garden of Qatar Foundation and the various selling spots of national products in the country.
Director of Agricultural Research Department at the ministry Hamad al Shemmari said the increasing number of participating farms reflects the success of previous editions.
He said the role of department complement the role of the agriculture sector in achieving food security in the state and finding solutions to the technical problems facing palm growing and date production.
The Dates Festival is being organised in Souq Waqif for the fourth year in a row. The fruitful cooperation between the MME and the administration of Souq Waqif led to the success and continuity of the festival, in addition to the distinguished location of the festival which gives the event a social symbolism and cultural dimension touched by visitors.MME expects to sell more than 250,000 tonnes of dates during the festival.
