A joint campaign to remove abandoned cars from Industrial Zone was launched on Tuesday by the Committee for Removal of Abandoned Vehicles, in cooperation with the Department of Mechanical Equipment, Doha Municipality and the security authorities.
The campaign was launched as part of the continuous efforts of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to check violation of Law No (18) of 2017 on public hygiene and to prevent distortion of Qatar’s landscape.
The campaign, which seeks to prevent environmental pollution and maintain public health, was launched in the presence of Saleh Hassan al Kuwari, deputy head of the committee and the head of Natural Reserves Department at the MME; Marzouq al Mesaifir, assistant director of Mechanical Equipment Department; and Ghanem Nasser al Qubaisi.
Speaking on the occasion, Kuwari said the campaign would continue until the removal of all abandoned vehicles from different parts of the Industrial Zone.
He said that the estimated number of abandoned vehicles in the Industrial Zone was 10,000, all of which would be removed from the area during the campaign.
He added that the campaign comes within the framework of MME’s keenness to maintain cleanliness and beauty of Qatar’s landscape in association with municipalities, the Internal Security Force ‘Lekhwiya’, the General Directorate of Traffic as well as other relevant entities.
He pointed out that the impounded vehicles are shifted to tow yards in different parts of Qatar.
Mesaifir said that the committee started the campaign in Doha, Al Shehaniya and Al Daayen municipalities and has now reached the Industrial Zone due to the importance of the area. He added that the committee has intensified the campaign to remove abandoned vehicles lately.
He asserted that the impounded vehicles are transferred to the tow yards in Al-Mashaf, Mesaimeer and Umm Salal areas. Subsequently, legal procedures are initiated under Law No 18 of 2017. After six months, the vehicles are disposed of either through auction conducted by the ministry, or through companies by dismantling them.
He added that around 18,000 abandoned vehicles are expected to be impounded in different parts of the country by the end of this year.
Lieutenant Abdullah Ali Shuail al Marri from Lekhwiya said that patrolling has been intensified to find abandoned vehicles and to get them removed.
Lt Ali Rashid al Marri of the General Directorate of Traffic said that the abandoned cars can hinder important projects in the country if not removed on time.
