Kabul: The Taliban have taken control of the whole of a district in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province, local officials said on Tuesday. The centre of Takhar’s Yangi Qala district was overrun by the Taliban on Monday night following two days of fighting between Afghan forces and Taliban militants there, the head of the provincial council, Wafiullah Rahmani, said. Provincial council member Arbab Rohullah Rawoofi confirmed the fall of the district, but the two council members did not disclose the number of casualties on both sides. (dpa)
