THE Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is working on national clinical guidelines for different types of diseases to be used by clinicians in Qatar to ensure patient safety, Director of Public Health at the ministry Sheikh Dr Mohamed al Thani said on Tuesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the fifth Qatar Patient Safety Week (QPSW) and first World Patient Safety Day activities, Sheikh Dr Mohammed said that guidelines for 40 diseases have already been developed and guidelines for another 40 diseases are on the anvil.
Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari attended the event.
Sheikh Dr Mohammed said the guidelines would ensure that doctors don’t commit mistakes to ensure patient safety.
He added, “The National Clinical Guideline Committee prepares guidelines which are then published on the ministry’s website to assist clinicians in Qatar. All doctors, whether working in government, semi-government or private hospitals, must follow the guidelines.”
So far, the guidelines are for diseases such as obesity, diabetes, back pain, hypertension, among others.
“We have already formulated clinical guidelines for 40 diseases and we are planning to add another 40 in the near future. We are going to have clinical and preventive guidelines for 40 to 80 diseases as part of the MoPH’s strategy,” added Sheikh Dr Mohammed.
The preventive guidelines advise people on how to handle their cases to avoid complications later.
He noted, “We are constantly publishing our clinical guidelines and we keep on revising and updating them to ensure patient safety.”
Virtual Reality (VR) applications can also help healthcare practitioners in handling different situations in this regard.
According to him, rehearsing in the Virtual Reality can help medical practitioners. “We are continuing to grow. We are adding new scenarios for the most common diseases or mistakes that happen in the system,” he explained.
Speaking about QPSW being observed from September 15 to 21, MoPH Acting Director of the Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Department Huda al Katheeri said, “QPSW provides a platform to share knowledge, learn from each other’s experiences and enhance collaboration and communication across the sector and other relevant sectors.” She added that this year’s programme is designed to stress the importance of speaking up and the role everyone must play to deliver safer care.
The event was held in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, and was sponsored and supported by Al Ahli Hospital, Qatar Red Crescent Society, Aster Hospital, Doha Clinic, Aspetar, Sidra Medicine, Alfaza Volunteer Center, Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute, World Innovation Summit for Health, World Health Organisation (WHO) and East Mediterranean office of the WHO.
