Iran wants to present a peace plan for the strategically important Strait of Hormuz at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York, President Hassan Rowhani said on Sunday during a military parade in Tehran.
He said the plan would bring together the Gulf states in a so-called “coalition of hope” to safeguard shipping in the area, without the involvement of other foreign powers.
“We want to present a peace plan for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to the UN,” Rowhani said. “External interference is problematic and dangerous for the Persian Gulf,” he added. Tehran wants friendship and brotherhood with all the states in the Gulf region and “hereby extends its hand,” said Rowhani, who will give a speech at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. The United States and Iran have engaged in a war of words over the Strait of Hormuz, an important shipping route in the Gulf region, where Iran has intercepted a number of foreign vessels.
Last week, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates said they would join a US-led coalition to safeguard shipping in the Gulf in the wake of an attack on two major oil facilities in Saudi Arabia.
Yemen’s Iran-linked Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the attacks on oil facilities in the eastern province of Buqyaq, but Saudi Arabia and the US suspect that Iran is behind them. Sunday’s military parade in Iran was held to honour the 39th anniversary of the nation’s war with Iraq. The anniversary of the military invasion of the then Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein is celebrated in Iran every year on September 22.
