A delegation from the Turkish Red Crescent visited Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) on Sunday as part of a trip to Qatar to hold meetings with government organisations and NGOs.
The team comprised Dr Ibrahim Altan, director-general, Yasir Feten, advisor to the General Manager, Rafa al-Turkmane, chairman of Basiret Foundation and advisor to the General Manager, and Ubaidullah Saken, financing fund manager.
The delegation was received by Ali bin Hassan al Hammadi, secretary-general of QRCS, Adel al Baker, director of the Office of QRCS President, and Dr Fawzi Oussedik, head of International Relations.
Hammadi welcomed the guests and highlighted the close relations between the two countries and organisations in light of their common humanitarian mission.
Dr Altan hope for stronger cooperation in many fields in the most affected areas, particularly for Syrians both in Syria and Turkey.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was prepared to extend the license of QRCS’s representation mission in Gaziantep for five years.
The two parties agreed to sign a broader framework agreement to work together on aid projects for the victims of disasters and conflict.
The new pact will ensure closer coordination, avoidance of duplication and access to as many beneficiaries as possible.
The proposed projects to be implemented included economic empowerment, water system repair, and establishment of social care centres for women and children, in coordination with government authorities.
Meanwhile, Hammadi took a tour of the ‘Maker Majlis: Islam in a Global World’, at Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) College of Islamic Studies (CIS), Education City.
The event has a section for QRCS, where the volunteers communicate with the visitors.
Dr Mohamed Evren Tok, assistant dean for Innovation and Community Engagement at CIS, said: “The idea behind the Maker Majlis: Islam in a Global World’ event is to bring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to a Qatari majlis. So, the venue is designed like a large majlis area, with a lot of organisations representing humanitarian action in the Muslim world, social entrepreneurship and different organisations that revolve around youth empowerment, capacity-building and entrepreneurship.
“QRCS has been a very crucial and supportive organisation by providing a refugee tent experience. The students and the public in the morning and afternoon are going to see the refugee camp experience and better connect what they are discussing in Maker Majlis with the real-world experience.”
He added, “We have sponsors, collaborators, and participants. In total, we have 23 different organisations; some of them are international such as UN Development Programme (UNDP), through their office in Beirut. They bring their youth representatives from Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan. We also have UN Volunteers Programme (UNV), whose regional manager will be with us. We also have local organisations such as Ibtikar, Silatech, Qatar Science and Technology Park, Quranic Botany Garden, and many others.
“Our motivation is to bring the Qatari and global perspectives together, and to ensure that whatever the problems in the world are, they are global ones, and they require global solutions. We believe that Qatar has been doing a lot internationally, and the youth need to know more about different opportunities and possible ways of solving the problems they face.”
