Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has launched a first-of-its-kind post-doctoral fellowship programme to foster career development of recent Qatari PhD graduates by supporting their transition from doctoral students to working professionals.
The announcement was made by GU-Q Dean Dr Ahmed Dalal at a press conference at held at the GU-Q Media Majlis on Wednesday.
The new programme offers a one year position, from August 2020 to May 2021, exclusively for Qataris who received a PhD or DPhil within the past five years.
The opportunity, which is a temporary paid position, allows early stage Qatari researchers and professionals to work closely with faculty at GU-Q and continue to gain research, teaching and mentorship experience while preparing their first publications from their dissertation research. It prepares them to be principal research investigators and/or junior faculty members.
“The post-doctoral fellowship is in line with our core aim of supporting research relevant to Qatar, strengthening fruitful mentorship collaborations between established and emerging scholars, and contributing to the development of the higher education sector in Qatar in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Dalal.
“The aim is to prepare outstanding junior Qatari scholars for future university teaching and research careers. By growing post-doctoral opportunities, GU-Q will also be supporting research that is relevant to Qatar’s development goals.”
The programme is open to Qatari nationals with a PhD or DPhil in the humanities or social sciences, who received their degree after January 1, 2015, or who will pass their dissertation defence prior to January 1, 2020, and graduate before June 1, 2020.
The application requirements are a cover letter describing research and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, dissertation abstract or research statement, and a sample written work in English. Applicants should also submit a separate description of teaching experience and interests and three confidential letters of recommendation.
The winner will be in residence at GU-Q for the full academic year and is expected to design and teach one or two undergraduate courses. He/She will present present his/her research at a GU-Q faculty seminar and is expected to give a public lecture on his/her area of research as well as guest lectures in relevant classes.
Application deadline is December 31, 2019. The winner will be announced at the end of Spring Semester 2020.
Information about the position, including on how to apply, is available on www.qatar.georgetown.edu.
