Celebrating the achievements of women leaders in Qatar, UCL Qatar hosted a panel discussion on ‘Women in Cultural Leadership’ at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Auditorium.
Dr Chatarina Hendrick, lecturer in Museum Studies at UCL Qatar, chaired the event, which brought together speakers from some of Qatar’s iconic cultural institutions to discuss the significant impact women leaders have on the rapid development of the museum and cultural sector in Qatar.
The participants included Sheikha Reem al Thani, director of exhibitions at Qatar Museums (QM), Shaikha Nasser al Nassr, deputy director of Curatorial Affairs at MIA, and Clemence Bergal, head of acquisitions and collections at QM.
The panel discussion was preceded by a presentation by Dr Hendrick on her ongoing research project on ‘the significant roles of women in museum and cultural sector in Qatar’.
The research seeks to uncover the ways these ambitious women lead their teams and organisations. “We cannot avoid the fact that we have amazing role models here in Qatar, many of them are women,” she said.
During her presentation, Dr. Hendrick indicated that Qatari and non-Qatari women make up the significant majority of leadership roles at Qatar Museums and across the museum sector.
She also explained how a woman’s leadership style tends to be more transformational and visionary. She pointed to the importance of collaboration culture and emotional intelligence to be at the centre of the work.
The women leaders present at the event shared their experiences as leaders of different teams and projects. Shaikha Nasser al Nassr concentrated on self-confidence and the importance of experimenting before making decisions.
When asked how challenging is dealing with and controlling people at work could be, Sheikha Reem al Thani said that challenges are expected at all times and handling difficult people or situations is part of the job. “It is not about the gender, it is about the characteristics of a person, male or female,” she added.
Clemence Bergal, who had previous museum experience in Europe, expressed her contentment at working in Qatar, saying, “Working hard is the key, and it will be rewarded.”
The event aimed to serve as a platform for communication and constructive dialogue for the public.
