Doha
Delighted with their good show at the recently concluded IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, the officials of the Ethiopian athletics team joined volunteers of Kon Group and Shabaab22 on a tour of Doha on Tuesday before leaving for their country.
Kon Group currently has a new project in Qatar, which is related to benefitting the local expatriates in relation with their Embassies and as such the tour arranged was to show the visitors the local culture and way of life in Qatar.
Appreciating the tour and expressing happiness at their good results at the championships, Team leader Dube Jillo Medagdu said, “The IAAF world championships in Doha was excellently organized. Our medals haul was also better here in Qatar than what we achieved three years ago at the London edition (with two golds, five silver and a bronze Ethiopia finishes fifth on the medals table).”
“All our young athletes have also come good and we see a promising future. There was no Bekele, Dibaba and other senior athletes for us at this championships, yet our other athletes did so well which shows that the young ones are coming of age. Except for a senior marathoner (not our marathon winner Lelisa Desisa, who’s 29), most others are relatively young. It is a result of our sustained efforts to develop athletes from grassroots level.”
On their experience of being in Qatar, Medagdu said, “Overall we felt at home in Qatar. The stadium, accommodation, transportation and logistics and technical were all in place. We found the people here to be nice and warm. The buildings are impressive and it is also very clean everywhere.
“We wish them the very best for a successful organization of FIFA 2022 World Cup.”
Also enjoying the trip was Selema, medical official of the Ethiopian contingent. He said, “The weather can be hot here, but the country is beautiful and the people are very nice. If I get a chance to even come as a spectator for the FIFA 2022 World Cup, I shall surely come.”
Explaining the initiative, Mohamed Riad al Massani, co-founder Kon Group, said. “The idea is a new kind of a project created by my business partner Hissa al Suwaidi and myself, which is to build a relationship between the expats in Qatar and the Embassies in Doha and to have shared communities. Our aim is to be ready for FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar with zero percent of human rights issues. We have a team of volunteers and the team of Shabaab 22 and we are increasing our base with each passing day.
“We are all moving ahead at full steam to hosting the 2022 World Cup and Qatar’s organizing abilities in sports events was once again reflected in the successful hosting of the IAAF Doha 2019 world athletics championships,” he added.
