London (dpa) - Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Wednesday insisted that he must be the one to lead any caretaker government to steer Britain away from a no-deal Brexit if Prime Minister Boris Johnson is forced out of office. Johnson''s Conservative government is still in discussions with EU officials about a possible Brexit deal but he has insisted that Britain must leave the bloc on October 31, with or without a deal. Corbyn and other opposition leaders are expected to table a no-confidence motion in Johnson this month. They have met several times since August but disagree on who should lead a planned caretaker government to secure a delay to Brexit pending an election or a second Brexit referendum, if Johnson is forced out. "A caretaker government would be one appointed on the basis that the government has collapsed and the leader of the opposition is [customarily] invited to form an administration," Corbyn told reporters in the southern city of Southampton. "When this government collapses I will accept that invitation and form an administration solely for the purposes of preventing a crash-out," The Guardian quoted him as saying. Backed by other opposition parties and pro-EU Conservatives, Labour succeeded in passing legislation designed to prevent a no-deal Brexit on October 31. Opposition lawmakers hope to hold Johnson to the new law when parliament resumes next week. Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson has suggested she could not back Corbyn''s interim leadership. But the Scottish National Party, the third largest party after the Conservatives and Labour, has said it could support Corbyn.
