Under the patronage of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, the Global Security Forum 2019 will begin in Doha on Tuesday.
The two-day forum will discuss security challenges posed by misinformation and its implications on a world where communication technologies are evolving rapidly.
Several ministers, representatives of international organisations and senior local, regional and international officials are expected to participate in the event.
The forum, which will be held at The St. Regis Doha hotel in West Bay, will provide a platform for stakeholders to come together, initiate a constructive dialogue and propose possible solutions to tackle the spread of misinformation.
The global forum assumes particular significance as organised campaigns propagating false information to individuals or groups have become a common and ongoing security threat. They pose an unprecedented risk, which requires the adoption of a comprehensive international and societal mitigation strategy.
Although countries deal with this phenomenon along with private and non-profit institutions, efforts based solely on governments or the private sector will not succeed in confronting this menace. An open dialogue must be conducted to develop effective and comprehensive solutions.
The forum is being organised by the Soufan Centre in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and a number of strategic partners In its first edition held in 2018, the forum discussed the issue of returning foreign fighters. Participants from more than 60 countries attended the first edition of the forum.
