Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani has paid a field visit to Mesaimeer Interchange Upgrade project and Citizens’ Subdivisions Development projects in south of Doha.
The PM was briefed on the progress of work in both the projects.
The PM stressed that the citizens’ subdivisions are the top priority for the government under the directives of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
The PM urged speedy completion of infrastructure projects, especially projects related to the development of citizens’ subdivisions.
The PM expressed happiness about the participation of Qatari engineers in the implementation of all projects under Ashghal, and stressed the role of Qatari youth in nation building.
For his part, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) President Dr Eng Saad bin Ahmed al Muhannadi clarified that the Ashghal strives to complete the works of Mesaimeer Interchange development project as per directions from the Prime Minister.
He said more than 65 percent of the project are complete including development of Mesaimeer Interchange and parts of roads connected to the interchange such as Rawdat Al Khail Street, Industrial Area Road, E Ring Road and Doha Expressway, comprising a total of 6.1 km roadworks.
The Ashghal president further recalled that the first tunnel at Mesaimeer Interchange was opened to traffic in October 2019, six months ahead of schedule, and other parts will be opened soon.
The project is scheduled to be completed by next year.
He pointed out that Ashghal is committed to its integrated plan to serve the citizens’ subdivisions as a top priority.
He said works are going on in several vital areas such as Al Wukair South, Al Ebb, Leabaib, Al Kharaitiyat, West Muaither and some other areas to provide services to more than 16,500 residential subdivisions.
Ashghal is also working on tendering similar projects to serve 12 areas in the state covering 16,900 subdivisions.
Manager of Highway Projects Department at Ashghal Eng Bader Darwish said the Mesaimeer Interchange directly connects with Al Thumama Stadium and facilitates ease of access to the Al Janoub Stadium.
He clarified that works are progressing to complete the interchange before the much-awaited World Cup matches begin.
The new interchange, after completion in 2020, would significantly improve traffic and save more than 70 percent of travel time.
On his part, Manager of Road Projects Department at Ashghal Eng Saud al Tamimi said Ashghal is taking over the development of new and existing citizens’ residential subdivisions as a top priority, and thus works are ongoing for tender of projects to serve 12 areas in the state covering 16,900 subdivisions, including Al Wajbah East, Duhail, Umm Lekhba, Rawdat al Jahhaniya, Semaisma and Jeryan Najima among others.
The new three-level interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar and it includes nine tunnels to provide free flow traffic. The 6.1km long interchange consists of three to four lanes in each direction to accommodate about 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Ashghal is also on the verge of launching similar projects to serve 12 regions in the state to serve more than 16,900 subdivisions in these areas and the projects are in the stage of tendering and awarding.
