THE Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) highlighted Qatar’s efforts to achieve balance between environmental protection and development goals, at the COP 25 currently under way in Madrid, Spain.
Speaking at one of the events held on the sidelines of the climate change conference, Mohammed Omar al Bader from the MME’s Climate Change Department said that Qatar takes into account environment in all its developmental plans.
Shashi Prakash from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) spoke on the sustainable cooling technology used in Qatar’s stadiums as the country gears up to host FIFA World Cup in 2022.
He stressed Qatar’s commitment to hosting a sustainable and secure event, and described the distances between the stadiums as well as the transportation infrastructure in place to host the event.
Prakash added that all stadiums would be repurposed after the World Cup to host schools and other public spaces. He also drew attention to SC’s sustainability plan, including a gender support network to promote the football skills of girls and a worker welfare programme.
He asserted that 2022 will see a carbon-neutral World Cup to be achieved in part through raising awareness of companies, schools and local population through a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory.
Stating that the design of the stadiums will reduce energy demand, Prakash noted that cooling technologies will target individual seats and pitch, and not the entire space.
Mohammed Ibrahim al Marzooqi from Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) said that Qatar’s aviation industry supports over 65 million jobs worldwide. He underlined the authority’s continuous efforts to mitigate climate change, adding that it has an action plan for reducing CO2 emissions.
