Manila: A magnitude-6.9 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Sunday, killing at least four people and sending panicked residents out into the streets as structures collapsed.
A three-storey supermarket collapsed in Padada town in Davao Del Sur province, 1,000 kilometres south of Manila, killing at least three people, according to Superintendent Samuel Tadeo, the Bureau of Fire Protection operations chief.
Six were rescued from the collapsed building, while an undetermined number of people were believed to be trapped under the rubble, he said.
In nearby Matanao town, a 6-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a falling concrete wall in their house, said Vincent Fernandez, the municipality’s mayor. At least 14 people were also reported injured in the town of Magsaysay. (DPA)
