Taipei: Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen vowed to strengthen ties with the United States and Japan as she received representatives from both countries on Sunday, one day after she was re-elected on an anti-China platform.
Tsai met with Brent Christensen, director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the de facto US embassy in Taipei, according to a statement of the Presidential Office.
She told him that democracy and freedom create the foundation for long-term partnership with the US, and that Taiwan will keep partnering with the US on issues including regional security and the economy. Christensen said the US will continue to pursue shared interests in sectors of trade, technology, democracy and others, according to the statement.
Tsai also met with Mitsuo Ohashi, chairman of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, which is seen as Japan’s de facto embassy in Taiwan. She vowed to further strengthen bilateral relations with Japan in terms of the economy, culture and sports, and cited the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as an example. (DPA)
